The Wilton Select Board voted unanimously on Oct. 6 to shut the town office on Nov. 3, Election Day, freeing municipal staff to work the election, the Sun Journal reported.
Town Manager Maria Greeley cited vacancies and thin staffing. The town intends to have two ballot clerks working daytime hours and four in the evening, with office employees helping at the polls. Officials considered closing for every future election but approved only this one. Board member Nancy Allen said, "I think we see how it goes and then make that decision in 2027."
New DS300 ballot tabulators and an ExpressVote machine have arrived, and equipment testing should finish by Oct. 16. Absentee ballot processing is set to start at 9 a.m. on Oct. 29, with a second tabulator provided by the state.
Ordinary absentee voting ends Oct. 29. Applications under special circumstances open Oct. 30. Residents who register after Oct. 14 must do so in person, through Election Day. Property taxes remain due Nov. 2, ahead of the closure. Code enforcement work will go on during the closure, and the Select Board canceled its Nov. 3 meeting. The next regular session is Nov. 17.
