Sugarloaf and Sunday River Begin Snowmaking for 2026 Season
Sunday River had run its snow guns for about 12 hours by mid-morning, according to NEWS CENTER Maine.
Two Maine ski areas, Sugarloaf and Sunday River, have started making snow ahead of the 2026 season, NEWS CENTER Maine reported in mid-October 2026.
Sugarloaf posted photographs on social media confirming that snowmaking was underway, a step toward opening day. Sunday River also shared images of its snow guns in operation and had been running them for roughly 12 hours by mid-morning, according to the report.
Starting snowmaking at this point in the fall means the resorts can open earlier than they could if they waited on natural snowfall.
