The nonprofit Bangor Beautiful planted 16 tree saplings at the site of the Bangor Farmer's Market on the morning of October 22, WABI reported.

The native plants, including pitch pine and serviceberry, were provided by Maine Audubon. Volunteers also removed invasive species from the area, among them burning bush and buckthorn. The group said the native plantings are intended to build habitat and cut stormwater runoff, which would make nearby sidewalks easier to walk.

"We can't let our native species decline because the invasive species are coming in," said Annette Dodd, president of Bangor Beautiful, who added that the ecosystem needs native plants to support caterpillars and the birds that feed on them.

The organization repainted a shipping container in the area earlier in 2026 and said it plans to plant more trees at the site in the spring of 2027. Information about the group is available through its website and Facebook page.
