The national support group "Can We Talk?" has opened its first Maine chapter at High Street Congregational Church in Auburn, meeting monthly as the Lewiston-Auburn area continues to work through the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in state history, WMTW reported on October 24.

The chapter began in March. Sessions are typically held on the first Tuesday of each month and start with a home-cooked meal before moving into the sanctuary for music, discussion and reflection, according to the report.

The Rev. Debbie Duval, who leads the church, said the gatherings are not tied to any single topic and are not limited to the shooting, with participants free to raise whatever they are dealing with. She said the group welcomes "people of all faith, no faith, little faith and big faith."

The shooting in Lewiston killed 18 people. Karen Choate, a Lewiston resident of 40 years, told WMTW the event still feels unreal to her.

Support groups have become one avenue for residents to discuss trauma in the period since the attack, the station reported.

This story was first reported by WMTW.
