AI Chatbots Mislead Acadia Visitors on Reservations, Trails and Shuttle
With 4 million annual visitors, Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini each gave inaccurate or incomplete guidance on Acadia reservations, mileage or the free shuttle.

Artificial intelligence chatbots are giving Acadia National Park visitors inaccurate trip-planning advice, according to the Bangor Daily News. More than 4 million people visited the park in 2025, and many first-time visitors may not recognize errors in AI-generated itineraries, the newspaper reported.
One widely shared TikTok itinerary showed a coastal road trip from Portland to Kennebunkport to Mount Desert Island that misplaced Kennebunkport east of Portland and depicted a nonexistent ferry across Penobscot Bay. When the Bangor Daily News asked Anthropic's Claude to plan a four-day July trip, the chatbot wrongly suggested a vehicle reservation might be needed for Park Loop Road, when the actual requirement applies instead to Cadillac Summit Road, which needs a $6 reservation between May 20 and October 25. Claude also gave inaccurate trail mileage for several hikes.
Neither Claude nor ChatGPT recommended the park's free Island Explorer shuttle. Google's Gemini mentioned the shuttle but lacked current schedule information tied to the new Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton. ChatGPT also omitted the Trenton center and the Sieur de Monts Nature Center as places to buy park passes.
