Volunteers Carve New Stone Staircase Into Tumbledown Trail
High Peaks Alliance's crew built the steps to hold up better and give hikers and other backcountry users easier footing near Weld.
A team of five volunteers joined two High Peaks Alliance staff members on June 12 to work on the Little Jackson Connector Trail at Tumbledown Public Lands in Weld, the Bangor Daily News reported. Erosion-control drainage work took up the morning before the group turned to a new rock staircase meant to hold up better and give hikers easier footing. They finished a working section of the steps by day's end, with more construction set for a future volunteer outing. Staffer Emily Kidd said the work gave her new appreciation for trails she has used her whole life, adding she will never take a stone step for granted again. High Peaks Alliance, a nonprofit formed in 2007, maintains trails around Tumbledown under an agreement with the state Bureau of Parks and Lands, drawing together hunters, anglers, snowmobilers, mountain bikers and other outdoor enthusiasts from the region. Two more volunteer work days are planned, on Aug. 21 and Sept. 4.
