Maine Audubon opened a new trail designed for visitors of all abilities at its Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth, holding a ribbon cutting on the morning of October 19, WGME reported.
The 2,265-foot trail begins at the visitor center and runs through forest, across a wooden boardwalk and into open meadows. A spur leads to a vista over the Presumpscot River Estuary. The path is five feet wide and includes three benches for rest stops along with interpretive signs.
"The goal is for it to be really inclusive and available to everyone," Maine Audubon President Judy Camuso said, citing birding experience, mobility and vision among the factors the design accounts for. She said the organization expects to learn from the project and apply improvements to future trails.
Maine Audubon plans to build a similar trail outside Bangor in the summer of 2027, Camuso said.
