Maine Nonprofit Pushes Ban On Formaldehyde In Kids' Art Supplies
Defend Our Health wants formaldehyde banned from children's markers and has built a free database for parents to check products.
Maine nonprofit Defend Our Health is calling for a statewide ban on formaldehyde in children's markers and pens after reviewing chemical disclosures from major retailers, NEWS CENTER Maine reported. The group found that some retailers had not fully complied with Maine's law requiring disclosure of toxic chemicals in children's products, though it said most of the lapses appeared unintentional rather than deliberate. Formaldehyde is used in some markers as a preservative that keeps the ink wet and prevents mold. Defend Our Health has also built a free database so parents can check which art supplies contain the chemical. Dollar Tree has pledged to remove formaldehyde-releasing chemicals from its store-brand products, the station reported.
