Shah, Democratic Frontrunner, Pledges Day-One Fight With Trump on Costs
The leading Democrat for governor detailed six planned orders and faulted Trump administration cuts to disease surveillance during an Ebola outbreak.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nirav Shah says he would move immediately to sign a batch of executive orders if elected, targeting housing and energy costs while confronting what he calls federal overreach under President Trump.
Shah spoke at a press conference held May 29, 2026, at Quiero Cafe in Portland, where he detailed six such orders he would issue right away. His resume includes leading the state's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a post he held from 2019 to 2023, before serving as the No. 2 official at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the Biden presidency. Recent polling puts Shah ahead of the Democratic field, trailed closely by former state Senate leader Troy Jackson, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Shah used the same appearance to fault the administration's handling of a worsening Ebola outbreak in East Africa, arguing that federal disease-surveillance networks that once flagged such outbreaks early have been gutted. He said Maine itself faces little direct danger from the outbreak but warned it could still destabilize the region and ripple outward to the United States. By the morning of May 29, 2026, Shah said, more than 1,000 cases and close to 250 deaths had been tallied.
