Convicted Sex Offender Is Paid Greenville Firefighter; His Brother Is Chief
Federal probation cleared Tony Murray to keep serving; it's unclear how the department deploys him, since Maine law doesn't bar registrants.

A Greenville man listed on Maine's sex offender registry is a member of the town's volunteer fire department, where his brother is chief and other relatives also volunteer, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Eugene "Tony" Murray, 32, pleaded guilty in 2021 to possessing child sexual abuse material and was sentenced the following year to slightly more than a year in prison and five years of supervised release. He is registered as a tier one offender, the category considered least likely to reoffend.
Sawyer Murray, the fire chief, told the newspaper that federal probation officers knew of his brother's service and had cleared it, and that the department follows their guidelines. He said his brother was on the roster before the conviction but would not discuss how firefighters are hired. A town employee said Tony Murray receives a stipend, which is typical.
Their father, Eugene Murray Jr., chairs the select board. He and Town Manager Mike Roy did not return calls, and Tony Murray declined to comment.
Neither Maine nor federal law prohibits people on the registry from serving as firefighters, though some other states do. Probation terms sometimes restrict contact with minors, and it is unclear how the department uses Tony Murray on emergency calls.
The 26-member department covers Greenville, a town of about 1,400, and several surrounding communities in the Moosehead Lake area.
