Ads paid for by a political action committee supporting U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine ran in Portland, Oregon, rather than Portland, Maine, NBC reported on October 12, according to the Bangor Daily News.
The group, Defending Main Street SuperPAC Inc., spent between $20,000 and $25,000 on the ads, which referred to Collins' Democratic challenger as "taxin' Troy Jackson," NBC reported.
Sarah Chamberlain, president and chief executive of the super PAC, told NBC she was "absolutely furious" about the error and said the Oregon placement had been taken down and the ads were running in Portland, Maine.
A spokesperson for Cross Screen Media, the firm that placed the buy in the Oregon market, acknowledged the mistake and attributed it to the volume of campaigns the company handles, NBC reported. The spokesperson said the money was refunded to the super PAC.
