Maine Heating Oil Prices Jump 74% Ahead Of Winter
State energy officials say heating oil now averages $5.77 a gallon, a rise that adds $675 to a typical tank.
The average cost of heating oil in Maine has risen 74% since 2025, to 577 cents a gallon, the Maine Department of Energy Resources reported, according to NEWS CENTER Maine. That increase adds roughly $675 to the cost of filling a 275-gallon tank compared with 2025, with about half of Maine households facing similarly steeper bills. Energy Commissioner Selena Cunningham said the state depends more heavily on heating oil than any other state in the country, leaving residents especially exposed when fuel markets spike. Officials pointed out that today's prices are well above levels recorded in 2023. Assistance programs exist to help Maine households manage the higher heating costs during the 2026-27 winter heating season, the department said.
