Cheverus Erases 10-Point Deficit in Final Minutes to Win Class A Title
Freshman Kristin King’s overtime scoring sealed a 63-61 comeback win over Hampden Academy in Portland.
Cheverus High School of Portland won the Class A girls basketball state championship on Feb. 28, beating Hampden Academy 63-61 in overtime at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The Stags were down 17 at halftime and still trailed by 10 with under four minutes left in regulation. A 12-2 run tied the game at 54 and sent it to an extra period.
Freshman Kristin King led all scorers with 24 points. In overtime she hit a 3-pointer, banked in the go-ahead runner with 42 seconds left and made two free throws with 22 seconds remaining. Kylie Lamson, a Miss Maine Basketball finalist, added 21 points and five steals, and junior Addison Jordan had seven points and seven steals.
Hampden outrebounded Cheverus 37-26 but turned the ball over 27 times, 20 of them after halftime as the Stags pressed full court. Cheverus had nine turnovers. Junior Eve Wiles scored 17 for the Broncos, and senior Grace LaBree had 15 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.
Hampden coach Nick Winchester credited the Stags for staying with their game after a poor first half. "They just made shots and kept coming in the second half and never quit," he said.
Cheverus finished the season 21-1, and Hampden ended at 17-5.
