Maine Medical Center Staff Protest Nurse's ICE Arrest

Colleagues at Maine Medical Center demonstrated after federal immigration agents took nurse Debora Kapisha into custody, according to WMTW. The Maine State Nurses Association argued that Kapisha holds valid work authorization because she has an asylum application awaiting a decision. A U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson pushed back on that claim, saying "any pending application does not confer legal status." WMTW's report did not say when agents detained Kapisha or how far her asylum case has progressed. The nurses' association and Homeland Security offered conflicting accounts of whether Kapisha could keep working while her case is under review, the report said.
