Urban Pizza's Bangor Shop Closes Again so Sister Blaze Locations Keep Licenses

A new Maine cap on liquor licenses per owner is forcing Urban Pizza's Main Street location to close for the second time in two years.

Urban Pizza's location on Bangor's Main Street will close on April 29, 2026, its second shutdown in less than two years, according to a Facebook post cited by the Bangor Daily News. The shop at 329 Main St. first opened in December 2023, shut down about a year later, then reopened in December 2025.

The post attributed the latest closure to a 2026 change in Maine's liquor license law that now caps how many licenses one business group may hold. According to the post, the ownership group — which also operates several Blaze restaurants in Bangor, Bar Harbor and Blue Hill — appears to have exceeded that cap and is closing Urban Pizza so its other locations retain their licenses. The post said alcohol sales had been essential to building the shop's customer base and that it would have kept operating otherwise.

Urban Pizza did not answer the newspaper's request for comment. Earlier reports had quoted Matt Haskell describing himself as the restaurant's owner, but the closure notice attributed control to a wider ownership group instead.

The Urban Pizza brand is staying in Maine: a new outlet is planned for Bar Harbor, inside a building behind Blaze that already carries a liquor license.
