A historic building at the edge of Houlton's Market Square is on the market for $750,000, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Owner Stephen Hutchinson said the property, known as the Town and Country Block, spans five stories and 5,673 square feet and has stood in downtown Houlton for 126 years. For nearly 50 years it was home to the Town and Country clothing and footwear store, a family business that closed in 2016. Hutchinson's father, Eugene Hutchinson, purchased the property back in 1974 from Leland Ludwig Jr., the MIT graduate who designed the rooftop temperature gauge fashioned out of an old oil-tank bottom, a local landmark.

Stephen Hutchinson incorporated as Town and Country Block Inc. in 2017 and remade the interior into commercial space and apartments, adding a furnace, an oil tank, sprinklers and separate HVAC units throughout. The nonprofit Fedcap Opportunity Center now leases two floors for job-training programs and has five years left on its lease; four apartments occupy the upper floors and are also occupied by tenants.

Hutchinson, who said he has been connected to the building since he was a newborn, decided to part with it because "it was just time."
