Local Buyers Move to Take Over Bangor Mall After Years of Violations
Sen. Joe Baldacci says the group under contract wants to revive the mall, which owes $1.1 million in fines and had its Sears wing condemned in February.

The Bangor Mall is under contract to be sold to a local buyer, state Sen. Joe Baldacci told the Bangor Daily News, and owner Namdar Realty Group confirmed the pending deal.
Few details are public. Baldacci, a Democrat who represents Bangor and Hermon, said the contract is in place, with the deal likely taking another 30 to 60 days to advance. He described the buyer as a group of investors aiming to make the mall more viable for businesses and the public, and said one is a businessman whose family goes back generations in Bangor. Plans for the site have not been announced, and a city spokesperson said Bangor could not confirm a sale.
New York-based Namdar paid $12.6 million for the mall in 2019, about half its assessed value then. As of April 1, 2025, the city's assessment put the property's value at just under $13.5 million. The property has lost many tenants and faced years of legal disputes over its condition. A judge ruled Namdar owes $1.1 million for code violations, and the company is negotiating a settlement with the city. In February, Bangor condemned the former Sears wing and shut off its power, forcing several businesses to move or close temporarily.
Baldacci earlier proposed having the state buy or take the mall for affordable housing. That bill failed; lawmakers instead asked the Maine Redevelopment Land Bank Authority to study uses for the property.
