Katahdin Region's Largest Employer Names Insider Finance Chief as CEO
McAvoy, the hospital's finance chief since 2018 and a trustee since 2002, takes over July 1 at the region's largest employer.

Millinocket Regional Hospital has chosen Mellissa McAvoy, its chief financial officer and chief operating officer, as its next chief executive, according to an announcement published by the Bangor Daily News. She will take over from outgoing CEO Dr. Robert Peterson on July 1, 2026.
The hospital said McAvoy was picked after a nationwide search. She has long ties to the organization: she joined its board of trustees in 2002, became board president in 2012 and has held the finance and operations jobs since 2018. She also owns Calculations, Inc., an accounting firm in Patten.
McAvoy, a licensed CPA, earned her undergraduate business administration degree at the University of Maine, then added two master's degrees, in business administration and in accounting and financial management, from Keller Graduate School of Management. She also finished the Hanley Center for Health Leadership program.
Peterson called her a smart, capable leader who makes thoughtful decisions. McAvoy said a hospital in a rural community serves as “an anchor in the community.”
Millinocket Regional is a 25-bed critical access hospital serving the Katahdin region and is the area's largest employer, with more than 200 workers. McAvoy lives in Benedicta.
