The University of Maine System's board of trustees voted on May 27 to extend Chancellor Dannel Malloy's contract by one year, keeping him in the role through June 30, 2028, according to the Bangor Daily News. The vote came during a special public meeting. Trustees had approved a two-year extension for Malloy in 2024.

Board Chair Roger Katz said continuity matters as the system prepares for a leadership transition in 2028. Trustees also credited Malloy's tenure with a new joint accreditation status, reviewed together by the New England Commission of Higher Education rather than by each university on its own. The flagship University of Maine in Orono also received a Carnegie R1 research designation during his time as chancellor.

Trustees also pointed to eight consecutive semesters of enrollment growth and the system's first balanced budget without drawing on reserves. Malloy, who has led the system since 2019, said on May 28 he was "grateful" for the extension. He previously served as governor of Connecticut and mayor of Stamford.
