Cut-Rate Planet Fitness Set to Open Beside $60-a-Month Ellsworth Rival
The 24-hour chain, known for low-cost memberships, would open next to Queen City Athletics, which charges $60 a month, in the Maine Coast Mall.

A location of the national Planet Fitness chain is coming to the Maine Coast Mall in Ellsworth, the shopping center anchored by Hannaford and TJ Maxx, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The budget gym brand is expected to move into space near Queen City Athletics, an existing 24-hour gym at the mall, and Label Shopper, a clothing retailer set to shut its doors on July 9. No opening date has been announced. Planet Fitness's website already lists the Ellsworth club as "coming soon" and is taking sign-ups ahead of time, though as of June 30 no signage had gone up at the mall and the company had not answered a request for comment.
Beyond typical cardio and weight equipment, the site is expected to include instructor-led fitness classes and massage chairs reserved for Black Card Spa members, per the company's site. The Ellsworth club would mark Planet Fitness's 14th in Maine and its farthest-east location nationwide. The brand runs upwards of 2,900 clubs in six countries and is valued near $4.1 billion, per estimates from the research firm Macrotrends.
Membership at the existing Bangor Planet Fitness runs $15 monthly before fees. In the same mall, Queen City Athletics charges $60 monthly or $20 for single-day access, its site shows.
