Franklin County Excavators Help Free Moose Trapped in Well

Connor and Lance Dolan used heavy equipment to dig a ramp near Route 27, letting the bull moose climb out without being sedated.

By Caroline Doucette

Two Franklin County brothers who own an excavation company worked with Maine game wardens to free a bull moose that had fallen into a hidden well near Route 27 in the Sugarloaf area, NEWS CENTER Maine reported on October 12.

Connor and Lance Dolan brought heavy equipment to the site and dug a ramp out of the well while wildlife staff directed the operation, according to the report. The moose had been trapped overnight and climbed out on its own once the ramp was finished.

Crews avoided sedating the animal so it could remain part of the state's hunting population, NEWS CENTER Maine reported.

It was the second rescue of its kind in the region within a year, according to the report.
