Portland Barber Norman Millette Still Working at Age 88
Millette has cut hair on Congress Street since 1959 and commutes by bus to open the shop himself each day.
Norman Millette, 88, is still working behind the chair at his barbershop on Congress Street in Portland, where he has cut hair since 1959, NEWS CENTER Maine reported in a video segment published on October 14, 2026.
Millette rides the bus into the city, unlocks the shop and begins the day's appointments, a schedule he has kept for close to seven decades, according to the report. Some of the customers who first sat in his chair as teenagers are now in their 60s.
The barbershop has taken on added importance in his life since his wife died in 2025, according to the report. Millette described the work as a steady anchor rather than simply a job.
