A 43-unit apartment community for adults 55 and older is complete in the Landry Village neighborhood of South Portland, WGME reported on October 15.

The South Portland Housing Authority developed the project, which was designed to let older residents live independently while staying connected to neighbors, according to the report. The housing authority said additional expansions to the village are planned.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, said age-restricted housing can ease pressure elsewhere in the market by opening up larger homes. "That means one more young family can move into South Portland," Pingree said.

Officials described the opening as another step toward addressing Maine's housing shortage.
