County Federal Credit Union Swaps Leased Bangor Branch For Owned, Bigger Site

County Federal Credit Union will swap its Main Street branch in Bangor for a newly built location at 96 State St., CEO Ryan Ellsworth said on April 30. Crews are due to break ground in June 2026, with doors opening by May 2027.

At 3,700 square feet, the branch will be significantly larger than the credit union's current spot at 466 Main St., which runs under 2,000 square feet, and will offer two lanes for drive-thru banking plus a drive-up ATM, up from a single lane today. Owning rather than leasing the new building gives the credit union added flexibility, Ellsworth said, and the branch will add a handful of positions, bringing staffing to roughly eight to 10 workers.

City property records show the 0.72-acre parcel, once the site of a gas station, later a convenience store and then an office building, sold for $350,000. The State Street site is more centrally located than the Main Street branch, which sits across from the Cross Insurance Center on the outskirts of town. "We feel like it would be more convenient for the members if it was a little bit more centrally located," Ellsworth said. He noted the credit union had weighed moving its headquarters to Bangor as its membership grew beyond Aroostook County, but chose to stay put. Bangor's Planning Board signed off on a land development permit for the project in April.
