Dental Hygienist Bets $40,000 on Aroostook's First Fat-Freezing Spa
All About the Curves, the only fat-freezing spa north of Augusta, already has repeat clients after Lynne Oakes's $40,000 equipment investment.
Lynne Oakes, a dental hygienist, has opened All about the Curves in Fort Kent, the first business in Aroostook County to offer fat-cell freezing, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The cryotherapy spa opened less than a month ago and already has repeat clients. It is the only shop of its kind north of Augusta.
Oakes decided to open the business after trying the treatment at an Augusta spa and seeing results. The equipment cost more than $40,000, a price that initially discouraged her, but the Augusta spa's owner, Karen Wormell, urged her to go ahead and helped her train and earn certification through CryoSlim, which makes the machines. Oakes also works as a bookkeeper for another local business.
The technique, called cryolipolysis, uses a handheld device and gel to freeze fat beneath the skin; the dead cells are later flushed from the body. Oakes said clients may notice a change about two weeks after one session, though several sessions are recommended. She stressed that it is not a permanent weight-loss fix and that clients still need a healthy diet and exercise. The spa also offers a lymphatic stimulation suit meant to ease inflammation, water retention and muscle aches.
Fort Kent resident Sandra Pinette, who has had both knees replaced, said two sessions have already improved her mobility.
