Bar Harbor Panel Votes 9-3 Against $24,000 for July Fourth and Other Events
The cut could end town funding for the fireworks, movie nights and holiday decorations unless voters restore it in June.

Bar Harbor's warrant committee voted 9-3 against recommending the town's $24,000 community events line, which pays toward the Fourth of July celebration and two other Bar Harbor Chamber events, the Bangor Daily News reported. Voters take up the budget in June.
Committee member Kevin Knopp said the town already supports Chamber events with police and public works staff. He also noted the Chamber belongs to the Association to Preserve & Protect Local Livelihoods, a group that has taken the town to court over its cruise ship limits. Councilor Earl Brechlin said the town money could free up Chamber funds for what he called "political misadventures."
Town Manager James Smith said the Chamber must bill the town for its direct costs and that the town could run the fireworks itself.
Chamber Executive Director Everal Eaton said the Fourth of July events cost just under $49,000, and the Chamber has asked the town for $16,300. It is also seeking $1,550 for the Seaside Cinemas movie nights and $6,150 for Village Holidays. Eaton said donations and sponsors cover the rest, including about $8,000 in donations and $17,500 in sponsorships for the 2025 Fourth of July.
Chair Valerie Peacock called the fireworks a town commitment, though she said she is uncomfortable with the Chamber's membership in the association.
