The Portland City Council has approved a downtown location for the city's winter warming shelter, which will operate nightly with capacity for 45 to 55 people, NEWS CENTER Maine reported on October 14.

The shelter will be run by Seeds of Hope, a Biddeford nonprofit, at Elena's Way on Oxford Street at a cost of $688,000. It replaces the Riverside Industrial site used the previous winter, which drew criticism over selective opening.

In Bangor, overnight shelters are set to open on November 15. Committee members there have pressed for additional funding and improved staff training, according to the report, which said the city's shelters have seen 85 to 90 visitors a day.
