Toys R Us has signed a lease for a 3,600-square-foot storefront at the Auburn Mall, beside the Maurices women's clothing shop, the Sun Journal reported. Merchandise was being moved in as of October 14, but no staff were on site and no opening date has been set.

Mall management, which has been pushing to fill vacancies with new tenants, said the toy retailer has agreed to stay open all year rather than operate seasonally. The Sun Journal said it was unable to reach the company.

The chain sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2017 and shut its remaining U.S. stores in 2018, including locations in South Portland and Bangor. New York-based brand management company WHP Global bought a controlling interest in 2021 and has been rebuilding the name since.

That effort has included shop-in-shop counters in more than 400 Macy's stores, among them the Maine Mall in South Portland, plus roughly 160 additional stand-alone locations opening through a deal with Go! Retail Group. Some of those are seasonal.

The current format is smaller than the warehouse-scale stores the chain was known for, leaning on collectibles, LEGO sets and interactive Creator Studios.
