A candy store called Oh, Grow Up! opened Jan. 30 at 21 Central St. in downtown Bangor, becoming the only shop of its kind in the city, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Most of the inventory is sold through a self-serve pick-and-mix wall with roughly 80 choices, from jelly beans and peach rings to chocolate malt balls and lollipops. Customers can pay $5.50 to fill a box or buy candy by the bag at $11.50 a pound. Owner Andy Day said he works with several distributors to carry unusual sweets that local grocers rarely stock, including sour sriracha candy and gummy chicken feet. The shop also sells individual candies, gifts and novelty items, and staff plan to rotate the selection often.

Day renovated the space before opening and added a mezzanine lounge with a couch and a vintage Atari. Hours are 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays.

"This is something that is lacking in town," Day said.

The opening follows the recent arrival of a gift shop and several new restaurants downtown.
